Emergency Medical Technician

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) performs skilled work in basic emergency care within the pre-hospital setting. Serving as a member of a two-person response team, the EMT represents both themselves and Pennsylvania Ambulance with professionalism at all times. As the designated provider of basic life support, the EMT is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care, following established medical protocols, and assisting in all aspects of emergency response and transport.

Paramedic

The Paramedic performs skilled work in advanced emergency care within the pre-hospital environment. As a member of a two-person response team, the Paramedic represents both themselves and the organization with professionalism at all times. Serving as the lead provider of advanced life support, the Paramedic is responsible for delivering comprehensive, high-level emergency medical care in accordance with established medical direction and regional protocols.

FULL JOB DESCRIPTION – Hamlin Fire & Rescue

The EMT–Paramedic performs skilled work in advanced emergency medical care in a pre-hospital setting. The Paramedic serves as one member of a two-person crew and is the designated provider responsible for all advanced life support (ALS) care. Paramedics routinely administer life-sustaining treatments including intravenous fluids, cardiac monitoring, medication administration, airway management (endotracheal or nasotracheal intubation), and any advanced procedures permitted under the Northeastern Regional EMS Protocols of Pennsylvania. Work is performed under the supervision of Hamlin Fire & Rescue’s Medical Director, shift coordinators, and is peer-evaluated based on clinical performance and response effectiveness.

A Hamlin Fire & Rescue Paramedic must communicate clearly and professionally with patients, families, physicians, hospital staff, the 911 communication center, and fellow responders. Paramedics must exhibit respect for all individuals while demonstrating honesty, reliability, integrity, and a continuous commitment to excellence.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls as an ambulance attendant, providing advanced medical care within the paramedic scope of practice.

  • Administer and manage oxygen therapy, fluid resuscitation, medications, and advanced invasive procedures as indicated by patient condition.

  • Perform advanced emergency care in accordance with the Northeastern Pennsylvania Regional Protocols, Hamlin Fire & Rescue policies, and under the direction of the Medical Director.

  • Participate in ongoing training to meet Pennsylvania Department of Health and Regional Council continuing-education requirements and to maintain proficiency in evolving EMS practices.

  • Complete all Hamlin Fire & Rescue documentation, reports, and electronic charting accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Become familiar with the service area’s boroughs, streets, landmarks, standby locations, and the Hamlin Fire & Rescue Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.

  • Participate in station, equipment, and vehicle maintenance, including cleaning, restocking, and ensuring ambulance readiness.

  • Maintain a professional appearance consistent with Hamlin Fire & Rescue’s standards of excellence.

ABILITY, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Ability to adapt to and manage all emergency situations using appropriate training, knowledge, and judgment.

  • Ability to safely operate ambulances or emergency vehicles with a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license, in all lighting, weather, and traffic conditions, and in accordance with EVOC standards.

  • Ability to complete and follow the Hamlin Fire & Rescue vehicle checklist, ensuring ambulances meet Pennsylvania Department of Health equipment requirements.

  • Ability to secure, track, and document controlled substances, following all Department of Health regulations and Hamlin Fire & Rescue narcotics policies.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and delegate responsibilities as the highest-trained medical provider on scene.

  • Ability to obtain patient information through interviews, assessment, observation, and diagnostic tools to meet the high standards expected by Hamlin Fire & Rescue and the Medical Director.

  • Proficiency with diagnostic equipment including stethoscopes, blood pressure devices, pulse oximeters, CO₂ monitors, and cardiac monitors/defibrillators.

  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot medical equipment including oxygen delivery devices, cardiac monitors, venous access equipment, and immobilization devices.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in determining appropriate treatment based on regional protocols and medical direction.

  • Physical ability to perform medical functions in a variety of environments, including confined spaces, uneven terrain, stairways, and during extended periods of standing, bending, or kneeling.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with 911 centers, EMS units, fire and rescue agencies, law enforcement, coroners, public service agencies, extended care facilities, hospital personnel, physicians, and physician assistants.

  • Ability to read and utilize maps of all counties, boroughs, and municipalities within Hamlin Fire & Rescue’s primary and secondary coverage areas.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Paramedic duties require a high level of physical ability including hearing, vision, verbal communication, flexibility, and strength. Work may involve walking, running, sitting, bending, and lifting in excess of 150 pounds. Duties may occur indoors or outdoors and involve exposure to weather, hazardous materials, smoke, and other dangerous environments. A Hamlin Fire & Rescue Paramedic must always prioritize personal safety and the safety of their partner.


EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, AND TRAINING

Hamlin Fire & Rescue values experience as an important component of professional development but also provides education and training to support newer paramedics. The desire to excel is essential.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License

  • Current Pennsylvania EMT–Paramedic Certification

  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR)

  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

  • Current Hazardous Materials Recognition (OSHA requirement)

  • Emergency Vehicle Operator’s Course (EVOC)

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (recommended)

  • Basic Trauma Life Support (recommended)

  • Education and familiarity with the Northeastern Regional EMS Protocols (additional training provided)

A Hamlin Fire & Rescue Paramedic should have a successful background in EMS; volunteer or private ALS/BLS experience is preferred. Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and a proactive attitude toward delivering the highest level of care. Paramedics must understand and anticipate the needs of Hamlin Fire & Rescue’s patients and community and must strive to meet the organization’s mission of providing exceptional emergency medical service.
